Amphora V acquired by Brighton Museum

Amphora V acquired by Brighton Museum

We are thrilled to announce that Amphora V, one of our most significant vessels, has been acquired for the permanent collection of Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, purchased through the Contemporary Art Society.

This acquisition is deeply meaningful to us—not only because it marks a milestone in our journey as makers, but also because Brighton is our home. To have our work become part of the city’s cultural landscape, housed in a collection that celebrates craft, materiality, and artistic expression, is an incredible honour.

The Journey of Amphora V

Inspired by ancient European pottery, Amphora V embodies the interplay of history and contemporary craftsmanship. Hand-turned and carved from unseasoned English oak, the vessel embraces movement, allowing time and natural drying processes to shape its final form. The surface, carefully patinated and textured, accentuates the raw beauty of the wood, echoing the marks of time that define historic amphorae.

A Connection to Place

As a Brighton-based studio, this acquisition holds particular significance. Brighton Museum & Art Gallery has long championed material-led artistry, and we are honoured that Amphora V will now sit among works that celebrate the evolution of making. Knowing that our vessel will be preserved and appreciated in our own city—where Ash & Plumb first began—makes this moment even more special.

Acknowledgments

We are incredibly grateful to the Contemporary Art Society for acquiring Amphora V for Brighton Museum. Their commitment to supporting contemporary artists and makers ensures that craft remains an integral part of public collections.

This moment serves as a powerful reminder of why we do what we do—to create objects that hold meaning, that connect the past with the present, and that invite others to experience the quiet dialogue between material and maker.
