Amphorae: A Collection in Variations

Amphorae: An Online Collection in Variations - 13th March 2025

Next Thursday, 13th March at 7PM (UK time), we’ll be releasing Amphorae—a new collection of 24 sculptural vessels, each a meditation on a single, timeless form. Rooted in our fascination with ancient pottery, this series explores the Amphora through scale and proportion, playing with variations in height, width, and volume while keeping the essence of the form intact.

These vessels are pared back, allowing the natural qualities of English oak to take center stage. Each piece has been carefully shaped to highlight the wood’s grain, movement, and imperfections, emphasizing the beauty that emerges through both the making process and the passage of time. The collection is finished in a palette of honeyed, smokey, and charred oak, with surfaces treated using Danish oil and Renaissance wax to enhance the depth of color and texture.

Fire plays a role in every piece, scorching the rim and body, creating a raw, tactile contrast between smooth wood and charred surface. This elemental process not only deepens the visual complexity of the vessels but also connects them to ancient traditions of firing and preservation. Some pieces feature hand-stitched details, mended with waxed cotton thread, adding another dimension of materiality—an interplay between fragility and resilience.

Amphorae is a quiet study in form and material—an exploration of how a single idea can evolve through subtle shifts in scale, texture, and proportion. We’re looking forward to sharing this collection with you next week.
