WINNER ANNOUNCED FOR QEST SANDERSON RISING STAR AWARD 2024

WINNER ANNOUNCED FOR QEST SANDERSON RISING STAR AWARD 2024

We had an incredible evening on Wednesday 9th October 2024 at the inaugural QEST Sanderson Rising Star Craft Award event at the beautiful Voysey House. It was an absolute honour for Ash & Plumb to be among the six immensely talented finalists, each showcasing their outstanding craft and creativity. We were delighted to be in the company of exceptional makers, including Bobby Mills, Laura Quinn, Efe Laborde, Olga Prinku, and of course, the winner of the evening, Hanny Newton. Congratulations to Hanny for her remarkable achievement!

Hanny Newton, a talented embroiderer, was awarded the prestigious title for her work reviving the endangered art of straw embroidery as a sustainable “natural gold.” The innovative way she has brought this traditional craft to the forefront is truly inspiring. Hanny will receive a £25,000 cash prize, allowing her to continue pushing boundaries in this fascinating craft. Her excitement was palpable as she expressed her gratitude and plans to further innovate within historical craft techniques, describing the win as a “dream come true.”

A huge thank you to Patricia van den Akker of The Design Trust for the nomination, and to QEST and Sanderson for creating such an amazing opportunity to celebrate craftsmanship. It was a night filled with inspiration, creative energy, and deep appreciation for the dedication it takes to bring craft to life. Being amongst these finalists felt like a great milestone for Ash & Plumb, reinforcing our commitment to pushing the boundaries of woodturning and hand-carved vessels.

During the evening presentation, we proudly displayed our Amphora XII vessel, giving guests the opportunity to experience our craftsmanship up close. This piece embodies our exploration of form, texture, and the tactile beauty of wood. It was truly special to share our work in such a creative atmosphere, surrounded by makers who share the same passion for craft and innovation.

We would also like to extend our thanks to Thomas Fattorini for crafting the award trophy, and to the team at Sanderson Design Group for their continued support of craftsmanship. Congratulations once again to Hanny Newton, and we look forward to seeing where this award takes her next! The future of craft is certainly in talented hands.
